During Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends Weekend, Midland's College Counselor Lynda Cummings and Head of School Will Graham met with a small group of parents to talk about the college application process. In that meeting, a number of resources useful to parents and students who are beginning to plan this process were mentioned.
The books included:
The College Solution by Lynn O'Shaunessy which has a terrific overview of the financial aid process,
The Fiske Guide to Getting into the Right College by Edward Fiske and Bruce Hammond which focuses on the overall application process and understanding how to find the right match between a college and a student, and
Colleges That Change Lives by Loren Pope and Hilary Masell Oswald which describes 40 colleges with unique and specific missions that are committed to enrolling not just the "perfect" student, but also the late bloomer or "B" student.
The websites included:
College Navigator, a college search engine that provides more than just admissions stats,
College Reality Check from the Chronicle of Higher Education which, among other things, allows you to see and compare real costs, graduation rates, and loan default data, and
College Completion, also from the Chronicle of Higher Education, which gives you more financial stats on individual colleges, including the endowment per capita.
