Who is considered an international applicant?

A

Applicants who are not US citizens are international applicants. US citizens employed overseas who file US tax returns are not considered international applicants.

If you are a dual citizen whose native language is not English, you are still required to take the TOEFL exam.

How many of your students are international?

A

Typically, 15-20 percent of our students will come from outside the U.S.

How much is the international application fee?

A

The international application fee for Midland is $100 USD.

Q

Does Midland offer an ESL program?

A

No, Midland does not offer an ESL program. All international students are expected to be highly proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language before they can be considered for admission.

Does Midland require international applicants to submit a TOEFL score?

A

For non-native English speakers, a TOEFL exam taken within the past year is required. Please note: Midland does not accept the SLEP, IELTS, or the TOEFL Junior tests. TOEFL score reports must be sent directly from ETS, we cannot accept copies sent by schools or consultants.

Does Midland require international applicants to submit an SSAT score report?

A

An SSAT exam taken within the past year is required for all applicants regardless of citizenship and native language. Score reports must be sent directly from SSAT, we cannot accept copies sent by schools or consultants.

What are Midland’s test codes?

A

Our SSAT code is 5074.
Our TOEFL code is 8802.

Does Midland have a minimum TOEFL score required for international student admission?

A

Admitted students typically score above 80 (out of 120) on the internet-based test. For scores falling below this level, please contact the Admission Office in order to assess a student’s ability to find academic success at our school.

Which applications does Midland accept?

A

Midland's online and paper application, the SSAT SAO, and the TABS common application.

Q

I am applying using the SSAT website or one of the common applications, do I still need to submit three teacher recommendations?

A

Yes, no matter which application method you are using, all applicants are required to submit a total of three current teacher recommendations – English, math, and school official.

Will I need to visit campus for an interview?

A

The interview is an essential piece of the application process and is required for all candidates. We strongly encourage applicants to visit campus for the interview. Our admission officers do not travel overseas to conduct interviews and therefore if you are unable to visit the campus, you must contact us to schedule a Skype or telephone interview. Please note, due to high demand, Skype interviews cannot be scheduled prior to the submission of your completed application including SSAT score. Please contact our office prior to February 1 to request your interview so that we can schedule it prior to February 15.

**ATTENTION APPLICANTS FROM CHINA** Due to the unprecedented demand for interviews from China, admission candidates living in China may be required to submit to a pre-interview conducted by our affiliate Vericant which is based in Beijing. Those interviews are reviewed by our Admission Committee before a formal interview is granted.

Does Midland issue the I-20 Form?

A

Yes, Midland is authorized by SEVIS (US Department of Security’s Student and Exchange Information System) to issue the I-20 application form. Students must apply, be admitted, and enrolled before Midland may issue the application.

Do you admit students to grades 11 or 12? Does Midland offer a post-graduate (PG) year?

A

Admission to the 11th grade varies depending on the current size of the rising 10th grade. Midland does not admit any applicants for 12th grade nor do we offer a PG year.

Does Midland have mid-year (January/Spring) admission?

A

If space is available, we will consider a mid-year applicant. Please contact the Admission Office for more information.

Q

May I apply to repeat a grade level?

A

There are occasions where applicants may repeat a grade level, however, this must be approved by the Director of Admissions after review of the application by the Admission Committee. The student’s age is also taken into consideration when requesting to repeat a grade level.

Q

Does Midland offer financial aid to international students?

A

As a rule, Midland does not award financial aid to international students. The collection and evaluation of financial documentation from different economic systems makes it difficult to determine a fair and appropriate grant. Therefore, Midland considers financial aid applications only from families who file US tax forms to the IRS.

Will I need a domestic host or guardian?

A

All international students must have a domestic relative or friend willing to serve as an emergency contact.

Q

Can international students remain on campus during school breaks?

A

No. Campus is closed during breaks/holidays. All students must leave campus. Please refer to the 2016-17 Midland School Calendar for more information.
