Alumni/Parent Weekend Celebrates Kathy Munger

Over the course of a weekend in late April, hundreds of guests visited Midland for the spring Alumni/Parent/Friend Gathering.  This year's event had special significance, as the school helped the Munger and Landreth families celebrate the remarkable life of Kathy Munger, who passed away in February.  Both lacrosse teams won, the horses put on a great show, the spring play was superb, the food was awesome (and largely homegrown), there were terrific student work displays, and the ceremony for Kathy was perfect.  Whew!
Read a special address by Head of School Will Graham, and go the the Midland Updates page for a short video of the ceremony.

Midland Community Mourns Passing of Kathy Munger

Adored and respected by anyone ever associated with Midland School, Kathy Munger passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 3 at her home in Inverness, CA.  Kathy arrived at Midland in the early 60s with her husband Carl, and they stayed until 1980, after Carl's 10 years of service as Midland's third head of school.  Two of her children are Midland graduates, and two grandchildren. Please visit this link to see her granddaughter's (Molly Livingston) gorgeous slideshow about Kathy's life.

Midland Benches/Desks for Sale

Background from Carlos Ortiz: The idea for making Midland benches began with the full size one I made for my good friend, George Myers '76, on his 50th birthday. This was followed with a half-size replica for Midland legacy Jim Munger on his retirement as head of Dunn School. I have made several full size ones for my grandson and for my grand-nephew and niece. The response has been favorable and I decided to offer them to other Midland alumni.
As you know, the original Midland bench designed by Paul Squibb was made from 2x12 lumber and measured about 2 ft long, 2 ft high, and about 2ft wide. The half-size replica is about 1ft x 1ft x 1ft while the 1/4 size is about 6 in x 6 in x 6in.
Prospective buyers can select the choice of wood - i.e. traditional Douglas fir or another choice such as pine, red oak or walnut, and the size - 1/4, 1/2, or full size. The benches can be left natural, ideal for an authentic replica, or finished with milk paint for pastel colors or an antique finish, a pickled finish, or a clear finish to accentuate a red oak or walnut choice.
The prices would depend on the size and type of wood selected. For example, a red oak 1/4 size would be about $75, a 1/2 size about $175, and the full size about $250. Except for the full size, shipping is free.
Please see the pictures. The small bench a 1/4 size replica is from unfinished walnut. The 1/2 size replica is an antique finish using blue milk paint. The full size model is Douglas fir in a pickle finish with several coats of exterior varnish.
I plan to have a website up and running very shortly. In the meantime, inquires can be made to me, Carlos Ortiz, via email (ortizian@dslextreme.com).
A portion of all proceeds from the sale of Midland benches will go Midland School.

First Time Back in 73 Years!

Jerry Griggs `39, who was here only one year (1935-36, he thinks!), came back to campus for the first time since leaving in `36.  While he thought he might find his jacket that he left over by the creek, he found instead a school that looks in some ways just like he left it, and in others, markedly different.  "There are girls here," he noted bemusedly.  It was great to see you, Jerry!
