Midland Booth at Santa Barbara's Earth Day Festival

Lise Goddard's Chemistry students were at the Midland booth during Santa Barbara's Earth Day on Sunday, April 18, 2010.  They made projects in class ranging from solar power to hydrogen fuel cells to wind turbine power and presented them to attendees at the festival.

Student Film on Midland's Sustainable Lifestyle

Mariah Chen '11 made a 2-minute video that captures Midland's environmental ethic and spirit extremely well. The film was an optional part of the Green Cup Challenge: submit a student-made video about conservation at your school.

Midland's Environmental Action Plan

The current status, goals, and educational value of Midland's environmental initiatives are described in Midland's Environmental Action Plan written by Lise Goddard, Director of Environmental Programs and reviewed by Midland's Environmental Advisory Board, which meets annually to discuss Midland's environmental programs.

Interdisciplinary Project

In Don Redl's Statistics class, students used GPS devices to develop a Google map of the oak restoration project headed by Lise Goddard, Director of Environmental Programs.  The goal of the project was to introduce students to new technologies and techniques for visualizing data.  The map is color-coded by germination rates with the aim of aiding Lise in identifying successful sites for oak restoration.  Each tree was planted by a Midland student, and if you have planted one in the last four years, you can find your tree by choosing "View Midland Oak Restoration in a larger map" at the bottom left of the map.  Each tree is sorted alphabetically by the person who planted the tree.

Class of 2011 Installs Midland's Fifth Solar Array

For the fifth straight year, sophomore students in Lise Goddard's Chemistry class have installed a solar array to help produce energy for the school. Additional projects the sophomores are undertaking include baking in a solar oven, and repairing a damaged solar panel on the sophomore boys' bathroom. Over the course of two days, sophomores clean panels, dig and pour the foundation, insert the scaffolding for the panels, wire the panels, and attach the panels to the skeleton. The culminating moment will be when they flip the switch and watch Stillman's (the school's dining hall) energy meter go backwards. Thanks Lise and Midland's Class of 2011 for making Midland even greener!
