Each year, Midland chemistry students use field test kits to sample the water quality of the Alamo Pintado Creek at downstream sites in Los Olivos and Solvang, and at an upstream site on Midland's property. The upstream testing involves an overnight hiking and camping trip a couple miles from campus, returning to Midland on Saturday morning. Though the water level is particularly low this year, there were pockets of water yielding interesting results. Drawing on their results and on data from past years, students write a scientific paper addressing how land use patterns and environmental conditions affect water quality. Click here to see photos.
