Outdoor Leadership wrapped up the fall sports season with a trip to Joshua Tree. The group which included faculty members Derek Harwell '88 and Ian Cummings and students Gillian Hannahs '13, Kendall Cook '13, Micah Kalem '13, Ben Cho '13, Bryce Bryant '15, Oliver Rothenberg '15, Talei Cody '15, and Ben Miller '16, spent three days camping in the park, exploring the myriad of rock formations, the curious Joshua Tree and other desert plants, and a day with the National Park Service Trail Crew. This marks the third year in a row (thirteenth for Derek) Midland students have gone to Joshua Tree to work with the trail crew. The group worked at two locations, helping to redefine the trail at spots where side trails had made the landscape confusing.
Derek says, "We were fortunate to enjoy spectacular weather, warm days and nights, and not a speck of wind. We spent Tuesday morning hiking and exploring before heading back to school... what better way to spend election day? (of course Ian and Derek had already voted via absentee ballot)!"
