GERALD DiPEGO : Making Stuff Up - As a Career

TALK: How I fell in love with fiction and became enchanted by The Big What-If, making a life out of imagination, with examples, tips and challenges. I will explore the thinking behind three of my films and one of my novels, from idea through publication or production.

BIO: Gerald DiPego grew up in the Lake country of Northern Illinois where he was captured early by storytelling. Adventure books and Films were magical to him, and by age 12 he had decided to try and create that magic. At 19 he began sending his stories to magazines. At age 28 he sold his first one.

That persistence brought him to Hollywood in 1970 to begin a career as a screenwriter and novelist. Now, five novels and over thirty films later, he is still writing and has published a how-to book “WRITE! Find the Truth in Your Fiction” presenting what he has learned about creating the magic and making it ‘feel real’.

He lives in the Santa Ynez Valley of California and has added plays to his passion for writing. His best known works are the novel, ‘Cheevey,” and the films “Phenomenon” “Sharky’s Machine” “Message in a Bottle” “The Forgotten” “Words and Pictures” “Instinct” and “Angel Eyes.”
His film for television, “A Family Upside Down” won a Golden Globe.
