Midland’s Annual Fund

Gifts to Midland’s Annual Fund are the most important gifts we ask of our community each year. When you support Midland’s Annual Fund, you help provide the financial support to develop and advance our unique programs to ensure that Midland can continue to provide an exceptional educational experience to all of our students. Your support allows us to be responsive to the needs of our students and faculty, helping advance the school by supporting a number of ongoing priorities, some of which are:

We believe that a Midland education should be accessible to families of all economic means. Holding that belief as one of our core values, we remain committed to enrolling an economically diverse student body and are proud to say that we offer robust, need-based financial assistance. About half of our student body receives need-based financial assistance, and Midland offers double the average per student funding for financial assistance than our peer schools. Awards range from several thousand dollars to nearly the full cost of tuition.

Your support helps us invest in the continuing education and growth of our faculty and staff. Our educators’ ability to learn, innovate, and grow is key to delivering the best education and school experience for each current and future Midlander.

Your support of Midland’s Annual Funds ensures the financial sustainability of the school by providing flexible support for unforeseen needs and expenses. Helping us meet our greatest needs each year.

Major giving sustains our school. To ensure the future of the Midland experience for generations to come, we are engaged in ongoing, mission-aligned campus renewal projects that will progressively renew our rustic campus. As we continue to respond to the changing requirements of the world around us (protecting our campus against wildfire dangers, increasing our sustainability and self-sufficiency through solar capacity and farm, for example), your support is crucial to the success and feasibility of our projects to meet Midland’s infrastructural needs. We intentionally keep our offerings simple and authentically mission-aligned. From Natural Horsemanship to a 10-acre certified-organic farm, our Outdoor Leadership Steward program to our many four-legged furry graduates, your support ensures that Midland is a unique boarding school unlike any other.

Planned Giving

Ensuring a Vibrant Future for Midland School

Individuals who provide for the school in their estate plans, either through a bequest, life income gift, life insurance policy, or other plan, are invited to join the Mighty Oaks Club.

If you have already made a planned gift for Midland, please inform the school so that we may recognize your generous legacy gift.

Thoughtful estate planning is an important way for you to plan for the future – both for your family and for organizations and institutions which have been important to you.

Making Midland a full or partial beneficiary of your IRA or retirement account is one of the easiest and no-cost ways to plan your gift to the school. Distributions from qualified retirement accounts to Midland pass free of both income and estate tax.

Midland can be a total or partial beneficiary of an existing whole-life insurance policy, or a new policy may be taken out for this purpose.

A charitable bequest is one or two sentences in your will or living trust that leaves Midland a sum, tangible property, a percentage of your estate, or a gift contingent upon certain events. Naming Midland School in your will costs nothing today, can be changed during your lifetime, and can be structured to provide support to the school after your other financial obligations have been met. To help you with this option, here is some sample language you can provide to your attorney. Each benefactor’s situation is unique and these examples include some but not all the possible bequest structures.

If you intend to name Midland School in your planned giving, please let us know by joining the Mighty Oaks Club.

Specific Bequest to Midland School
A specific bequest gives a specific item or specific piece of property to Midland School. Such bequests are fulfilled first, before cash and residuary bequests. If the donor disposes of the specified property during his or her lifetime, there will be no bequest to Midland.

“I give ________________ (describe asset) to Midland School, a California non-profit corporation (tax ID Number: #95-1684072), 5100 Figueroa Mountain Road, Los Olivos, CA 93441, to further the objectives and purposes of Midland School.”

Cash Bequest to Midland School
A cash bequest provides Midland with a specified sum of money from a donor’s estate. These bequests are fulfilled second, after specific and before residuary bequests.

“I give _____ Dollars ($_____) to  Midland School, a California non-profit corporation (tax ID Number: #95-1684072), 5100 Figueroa Mountain Road, Los Olivos, CA 93441, to further the objectives and purposes of Midland School.”

Residuary Bequest to Midland School
A residuary bequest is made from the residue, or what remains in a donor’s estate after specific and cash bequests, taxes, settlement costs and debts are satisfied. This type of bequest is sensitive to changes in the size of the estate over time.

“I give the residue (or _____ percent of the residue) of my estate to  Midland School, a California non-profit corporation (tax ID Number: #95-1684072), 5100 Figueroa Mountain Road, Los Olivos, CA 93441, to further the objectives and purposes of Midland School.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below to read answers to some of the most frequent queries about giving to support Midland School.

Your financial contribution to Midland’s Annual Fund supports the people and programs that make Midland the incredible school that it is: talented teachers, small and engaging classes, mission-aligned programs like Outdoor Leadership and Natural Horsemanship, and enriching arts and athletics programs. Each year, approximately 8% of the operating budget comes from your contributions to the Annual Fund that directly supports every aspect of school life. Midland relies on a combination of tuition, charitable donations, and endowment income to balance its annual budget.

Not without looking significantly different; about 10% of our annual budget comes from the Annual Fund each year! Midland would be less innovative in our approach to education. Essentials like low student-to-teacher ratios, faculty and curriculum development, unique extracurriculars – all integral components to our experiential and place-based program would be compromised. Charitable gifts are a necessary part of every independent school’s healthy financial profile.

Yes. We know every family makes financial sacrifices to pay their tuition and it is still important for every member of our community to participate in Midland’s Annual Fund at a level that feels comfortable to them. A higher percentage of giving from our parents demonstrates to outside organizations, who may be interested in awarding us grants, that our families are invested in the future and mission of Midland School.

Yes! We are grateful to the many corporations who support Midland’s Annual Fund through matching gifts. Please inquire with your employer to see if they are able to match your gift to Midland.

Ideally, our community identifies Midland as one of their top philanthropic priorities and recognizes that their contributions make a significant impact in Midland’s community. Gifts to Midland’s Annual Fund range from $25 to over $25,000. Every gift ensures that we raise the necessary additional funds for our students, above and beyond what tuition covers to support our programs, faculty, and facilities. As an added bonus, your participation encourages others to give and sends a message to our community that Midland matters. Every gift counts!

An endowment is a permanent fund that is invested and generates interest or dividend income annually. Midland has established an endowment. A portion of the income is spent each year, with the remainder being reinvested in order to achieve growth of the principal. Gifts to the general endowment provide the school with the greatest flexibility. Midland is able to spend the income from the endowment to meet the greatest needs of the school.
