Head of School Search | Midland School in California

Head of School Search

Dear Midland Community:

It is with great pleasure that the Midland Board of Trustees welcomes Hannah Nelson as Midland’s next Head of School beginning in July 2024.

Hannah brings to Midland her passion, deep experience, and continuing curiosity for experiential, place-based learning. She started her career in the classroom, teaching science and mathematics. Hannah has also served as a resource teacher and expedition leader. Throughout the interview process and her visit to our campus, she demonstrated a commitment to student-centered education and both supporting and celebrating the potential of each student, all essential factors for the Midland community.

Hannah will be joining us from Watershed School in Boulder, Colorado, where she has served as Dean of Academics, Dean of Students, External Educator Coordinator, Director of Student Support Services, and ultimately Assistant Head of School. She has a long track record for creating a positive school culture, and she is known as a transparent leader with strong listening skills. She cares deeply about hearing from all constituencies and building and developing teams that work effectively together.

We believe that Hannah will be a talented and confident steward of Midland. She has already demonstrated a commitment to embracing and advancing Midland’s mission, core values, and strategic goals and at the same time brings a spirit of innovation to develop and deepen programmatic offerings that align with our core principles. Hannah’s life story is also deeply connected to the outdoors and the environment, whether hiking, kayaking, climbing, or biking.

Hannah will be joined at Midland by her husband Marty and their child, William, who during their campus visit found Midland to be the welcoming community that we all know it to be and are excited at the chance to be a part of  it. We are confident Midland and Hannah will be a terrific combination.

Midland announces new Head of School for 2024 as Hannah Nelson

The Board would like to extend our gratitude to the entire Midland community for all the ways students, staff, faculty, and families participated in our search process over the past six months. We also owe our appreciation to the members of the Search Committee whose dedication of time, thoughtful facilitation, and commitment to this important work yielded such wonderful results.

In the months ahead, we will work to form a thoughtful transition with Hannah, and of course we hold continued gratitude for Christopher for his stewardship and consideration in this process.  We know Hannah is excited to meet our community and begin to work with us, and we will keep you informed of opportunities to spend time with her in the months ahead.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Hannah.

Sincerely,
Tom Mone
