Introduction to Mathematics

Midland’s mathematics program develops the habits of mind that define strong mathematical thinkers: logical reasoning, careful analysis, and persistence in solving complex problems. Courses build from foundational algebraic thinking to advanced study in calculus and statistics.

Because students enter Midland with different mathematical backgrounds, courses are organized by placement rather than grade level. This approach allows each student to move through a coherent progression of concepts while building confidence, precision, and fluency in mathematical reasoning.

MATHEMATICS AT A GLANCE

CURRICULUM

Students progress through a sequence that may include Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Precalculus. These courses develop algebraic reasoning, geometric thinking, and the ability to model real-world relationships using mathematical tools.

Honors sections in Algebra II, Precalculus, and Calculus are offered for students who demonstrate readiness for accelerated study based on prior coursework and faculty recommendation.

ELECTIVES

Advanced courses such as Statistics, Calculus I, Calculus II, and independent study in Calculus III allow students to pursue higher-level mathematics while strengthening analytical reasoning and problem-solving.

Students enrolled in Calculus I, II, and III have the option of taking the corresponding Calculus AB or BC AP exam during the spring semester.

Learning Progression: Math

Mathematics at Midland develops from foundational algebraic thinking to advanced mathematical analysis. Students build fluency in algebra, geometry, and quantitative reasoning before progressing into higher-level study in precalculus, statistics, and calculus.

Because courses are placement-based, students move through this progression at different starting points while developing the same core habits: logical reasoning, precision, persistence, and the ability to communicate mathematical ideas clearly. All Midland students take math placement exams to ensure they begin their learning progression at the best-fit entry point.

Information by Grade

Students begin with Algebra I or Geometry, developing fluency with algebraic relationships, equations, and spatial reasoning while learning to approach complex problems with structure and logic.

Students progress into Geometry and Algebra II / Honors, strengthening mathematical reasoning while exploring functions, systems of equations, and geometric relationships.

Students move into Precalculus / Honors or Statistics, developing deeper understanding of functions, modeling, probability, and quantitative analysis.

Students may pursue Calculus I / Honors, Calculus II or Calculus II, studying limits, derivatives, and integrals while applying calculus to complex mathematical and real-world problems.

UC-APPROVED CORE CURRICULUM

Algebra I

Develop fluency with equations, functions, and algebraic reasoning while building the foundation for advanced mathematical study.

Geometry

Explore geometric relationships, spatial reasoning, and mathematical proof while studying shapes, measurement, and logical argument.

Algebra II / Honors

Extend algebraic thinking through functions, systems of equations, and polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic relationships while strengthening analytical problem-solving.

Precalculus / Honors

Prepare for advanced mathematics through the study of trigonometry, advanced functions, and mathematical modeling.

UC-APPROVED ADVANCED CURRICULUM

Statistics

Analyze data, probability, and statistical inference while developing the tools to interpret complex information and real-world datasets.

Calculus I / Honors

Study limits, derivatives, and integrals while applying calculus concepts to problems involving motion, change, and optimization.

Calculus II

Extend calculus study through advanced integration techniques, sequences and series, and deeper mathematical analysis.

Calculus III & Beyond

Students who have completed the calculus sequence may pursue multivariable calculus through faculty-guided independent study, exploring higher-dimensional functions, vector calculus, and advanced applications. We can support students learning math up to a PhD level.
