History
The very first Midland Mirror was published in October of the school’s inaugural year, 1932, when the school itself enrolled only nine boys. Original Editor-in-Chief, George M. Martin ‘33, would be proud to know that the humble student publication has lived on.
Alums and the Midland community can access and search archival issues digitally within this password-protected site. It is thanks to the work of David Levasheff ‘71 and Rui Xin ‘19 that we are able to view and search these issues from anywhere in the world.
On this page, you can find the very first Midland Mirror along with current issues. Over the years, the Midland Mirror has evolved. The Mirror was on hiatus from 2019 until 2023, except to serve as an annual yearbook. We are excited to be bringing back the publication with its original purpose, to serve as an outlet for student voices.
The Newspaper’s Purpose:
From the Original Editorial Team in 1932
One of the most necessary features of any institution—educational or otherwise—is a record or history of that institution. In a school especially this is important, for much of a school’s reputation and tradition is founded on the history of the successes and failures of those who begin it. The activities of those who are here now will do much to determine the future course of events in this school.
Furthermore, in any school, it is necessary to have some means of informing the outside world of the activities of the faculty and students, and of expressing accurately the opinions of the members of the school with regard to matters directly affecting their happiness, success and well—being. A newspaper combines all these advantages with many others. It affords excellent opportunities for self—expression and for the cultivation of one’s ability to write concisely and accurately. Most of the work connected with it is interesting and pleasurable. And it gives valuable practical experience in an increasingly large and profitable field: that of journalism.
Therefore the students of the Midland Ranch School have founded this paper, tentatively to be called the MIDLAND MIRROR. We shall try to relate the news of all the important events in the school, and to reflect editorially the sentiments of the student body with regard to matters of mutual importance.
A special mention to Ava and Caleb ‘25 who as Co-Editors channeled the spirit of the original Midland Mirror team and organized the publication’s revival in 2023.
