International Students at Midland

Welcome! We are so excited that you are considering Midland for your high school education. Midland has welcomed international students for decades; graduates attest that the English-immersion environment and small community contributed to their success. As a school with only 80 to 90 students, we are able to know everyone’s name and care for everyone. At Midland, we are family. Because 100% of our students are boarding students who live on campus, everyone joins together for events, meals, and celebrations.

International families often have questions about life at Midland or our programs. We encourage you to check out this session for international students as well as our community webinar series. Some unique things we offer include:

About Midland

Midland School is an American high school offering grades 9 through 12. Grade 9 students are typically age 14 at the start of the school year in late August/early September. The age criteria corresponds with Indian classes 9 through 12 (secondary & upper secondary) or would be equivalent to four years of study for IGCSE & A-Levels. Students in IB programs would be best to enter Midland School at the start of MYP Year 4.

Midland School accepts new transfer students in grades 10, 11, and 12 if space is available. However, due to the American system of reaching graduation by earning specific academic credits, we recommend that international students start in Grade 9 or Grade 10 in order to complete the graduation requirements. Please note that all international students must submit proof of English language proficiency. Testing options are detailed below.

We know choosing the best match for high school is a big decision for you and your family, and we’re here to help you navigate — and enjoy — the adventure ahead. Testing Requirements

International students are required to submit proof of English proficiency as part of the application process. Currently we accept TOEFL and Duolingo scores.

TOEFL
Minimum score for 9th grade: 90
Midland’s TOEFL school code is 8802.

The Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL® iBT) measures your ability to use and understand English as read, written, heard, and spoken in universities. TOEFL is the most accepted English-language test in the world, used by more than 8,500 universities, agencies, and other institutions. If the Internet-based Test is not available, you can schedule the TOEFL Paper-based Test ((TOEFL® PBT) at an in-person testing center.

Duolingo English Test
Minimum score for 9th grade: 125

The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand, in under an hour. The test is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample which are shared with Midland School when you send your results. Certified results are available within 48 hours of the test session.
