Honoring Katharine "Kit" Rich Dreyfuss

Kit Dreyfuss at the Barn Groundbreaking Ceremony

Spring 2019

During Alumni/ae, Parents & Friends Weekend we were proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of Midland’s Katharine “Kit” Rich Dreyfuss Barn, a new arena and a faculty home.

Kit Dreyfuss’s connection to Midland goes as far back in history as anyone alive today, to the day she was born.  Born to Ben and Kay Rich, original faculty members in 1932 (with Ben Rich becoming the second Head of School, 1952-1969), Kit was the first baby born at Midland.  She was the original faculty “brat.” To say that Midland is in her blood is no exaggeration; it just is

I’m told that John Dreyfuss ‘52 used to say on Midland stages, every chance he could, that, “I married the headmaster’s daughter, and that was the best thing I ever did in my life.”  Together, John Dreyfuss and Kit Rich Dreyfuss raised the next generation of Midlanders… and the next. Kit is on track to have 8 grandchildren attend Midland.

Kit is known for her enduring kindness, her shrewd intellect, her quick and boisterous (and sometimes mischievous) laugh, her impeccable sense of Midland history, and her support of preserving Midland’s past, present, and future.  Today we honor Kit for all these things and one more: her enduring love of horses. Especially horses at Midland. Kit Dreyfuss is one of the giants of Midland history, a guardian of Midland’s soul.
