I realized the biggest shift within myself after this program: my view of what it really means to be from a small town versus a small community.

One of the most memorable experiences I had was a venipuncture procedure on a goat, which is where you take the blood from an animal.

Considering one’s view of life as a whole, I learned a lot more about how to just go with the flow and not stress the little details. Even with jobs there, things are in a constant state of motion.

From sea turtle research in Guatemala to hospital wards in Kenya, from botanical labs to Paris design studios, this year's recipients came back with clearer goals, deeper resilience, and a stronger sense of who they are and how they want to contribute.

A huge takeaway is that in the journalism industry, connections are everything. You need to make connections and become business associates, because you never know when your paths might cross again.

There was a big emphasis on forestry and disturbance ecology in deciduous forests. We went to a year-old mudslide, and observed how the entire ecosystem changes with the movement of the trees.

We learned about the three main types of perfume. These are called accords. The first type is chypre. Feminine perfumes tend to be based on this accord. The second type is called fougère - masculine fragrances tend to be based on fougeres. The last one is called amber oriental, this can be feminine or masculine and is more of a warmer fragrance.

I came into grade 9 knowing I was a pretty independent person. I could have responsibilities and be able to handle it. I‘ve been able to grow into that and grow more that part of myself. I learned how to balance work responsibilities with academic responsibilities and being a role model and leader for other students.

Experiential learning is the future of education. I think that experiential learning is one of the best ways to learn. The learning takes place everywhere–not just in the classroom–especially in a community like Midland.

The John Dreyfuss '52 Distinguished Alumni Award was created to honor a Midland graduate who gives back to the community. This year, his son Jim Dreyfuss '81 was honored.
